Sewanee-Bound Wilson Wants to Help Other Diabetics
Share:

Ivy Wilson had a hunch she wasn’t done looking at colleges. The Oklahoma native had toured a few campuses, but never felt a true spark.

Once the three-star senior made a visit to Sewanee in Tennessee, she instantly “felt at peace there” and was ready to commit.

Wilson’s mom was overjoyed with the decision. She attended Sewanee. Although she didn’t play tennis for the Tigers, Wilson’s mom had friends on the team and the head coach, Conchie Shackelford was the same.

“She was trying not to say anything because she didn’t want to pressure me. But she did want me to go there,” Wilson said. “She just wanted me to make my own decision. She told me it was hard to keep her mouth shut, but she did.”

Wilson started playing tennis at a young age and began competing in tournaments when she was 10. She tried playing nearly every sport growing, but stayed with tennis and basketball until realizing tennis made her the most happy.

Wilson was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 3 and has managed to thrive on the court despite her condition. She wears an insulin pump on the court to track her glucose level.
