Clay Court Championship Week
Patience a Virtue for Wagle
Share:

Following her three-set victory at the USTA National Girls 14 Clay Court Championships, Elise Wagle credited her parents and "mental toughness" for her title.

The rising eighth grader from Niskayuna, N.Y. defeated Valencia Xu (Livingston, N.J.) 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 to win a USTA gold ball and close out a tournament dotted with rain, including a downpour the morning of the finals, at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Fla.

"It's the 18th time I've played her and now have 10 wins," Wagle said. "I have to set big targets, and in the past, I may have been going for too much, so I had to stay back and be patient. I also want to thank my parents for putting up with me and give credit to the USTA national coaches, particularly Jay Devashetty and Maureen (Mo) Diaz."
