Championship Week
Kratzer Exceeds Expectations To Win Girls 18s
Share:

It wasn't title or bust for Ashley Kratzer.

The third-seeded Kratzer didn't want to put too much pressure on herself. She figured getting one step away from playing for the title would be considered a success at the USTA Girls 18 National Hardcourt Championships.

Freed from the self-imposed mental burden, Kratzer exceeded her ambitions.

The 18-year-old professional defeated No. 33 Kelly Chen 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego to capture the gold ball in singles and a wild card into the women's main draw of the U.S. Open.

“It is absolutely amazing. I was not expecting to come out of this tournament with a win. My goal was just to get to the semifinals,” said Kratzer, who dropped only one set in seven matches. “I knew I could do that. And after that, I wanted to just have fun and see how it goes. To actually win the tournament is incredible.”
