Kaitlyn McCarthy was pleased - but not surprised - at the USTA Girls 12 National Championships.
The rising seventh-grader from Cary, N.C., won her first singles national title Saturday, Aug. 7, with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 1 seed
Sofia Kenin of Pembroke Pines, Fla., at Windward Lake Club in Alpharetta, Ga.
"There were about eight kids in draw that had a very good chance of winning, and I believed I was one of them," McCarthy said. "It depended on how I played, and I played better than everyone else this week."
McCarthy, the No. 5 seed, lost only one set in 12 tournament matches, and that was against her doubles partner, Kenya Jones of Memphis, in the singles round of 16. McCarthy and Jones won the doubles, as they had at the clay court nationals earlier this year.
In the singles final, which matched the Southern (McCarthy) and Florida (Kenin) closed sectional champions, McCarthy took control in the seventh game when she hit a forehand passing shot for a winner and a service break to go up 4-3. McCarthy would lose only one more game.
