LONDON - Rain delays: zero
Sets lost: two
Games played in one boys semifinal: 62
Those were the most impressive numbers last week at the Wimbledon Junior Championships, with Taiwan’s Chun Hsin Tseng and Poland’s Iga Swiatek each dropping just one set en route to their titles.
Swiatek’s only lost set came in the first match she played, against top seed and ITF No. 1 Whitney Osuigwe, but the unseeded 17-year-old found her form in that challenging 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory, going on to win the last 12 sets she played at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Swiatek eliminated two other seeds in No. 16 Clara Burel of France and No. 4 seed Xinyu Wang of China, with Swiatek’s 7-5, 7-6(1) semifinal win putting her in a junior slam final for the first time.
Her opponent was another first-time junior slam finalist, Leonie Kung of Switzerland, who needed two qualifying round wins just to earn a place in the main draw. Kung took out No. 6 seed Maria Osorio Serrano of Colombia in the first round and eliminated No. 13 seed Caty McNally in the quarterfinals before winning a tough 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 semifinal over No. 10 Xiyu Wang of China, who had beaten No. 3 seed and French Open girls champion Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals.
