Jake Van Emburgh was 45 minutes away from missing the entry deadline for the Oracle ITA National Summer Championships.
Instead, the Oklahoma rising sophomore ended up winning the entire tournament.
Van Emburgh didn’t drop a set in six matches last week, defeating Alabama’s Edison Ortiz 7-6(4), 7-6(6) in the final at TCU’s Bayard Friedman Tennis Center to earn automatic entry into the ITA All-American Championships and $3,000 in prize money.
“There was a lot on the line between the wild card and the prize money, so it felt good to win,” said Van Emburgh, a Florida native. “I haven’t won a tournament since last fall, so it’s nice to get a title and go into the year strong.”
Wisconsin fifth-year senior Sara Castellano won the women’s singles title and reached the women’s doubles final to secure two spots in the ITA All-American Championships. The Italy native defeated Florida rising sophomore Victoria Emma 6-1, 6-4 in the singles final. Castellano and fellow Badger Lexi Keberle lost to the Kansas duo of Nina Khmelnitchkaia and Janet Koch 8-5 in the doubles final.
TCU’s Alex Rybakov and Max Kurzban pleased the hometown crowd by capturing the men’s doubles title. Rybakov and Kurzban defeated Nikolas Moceanu and Alexandru Grigorescu 8-6 in the final to become the first pair in TCU history to win a title at the summer championships.
