But after a friend committed to Illinois, she encouraged Heuser to take a visit and learn more about the program. The five-star junior reconsidered her geographical aspirations and committed to the Illini as well.
"My goal for going outside was put aside and I came to the realization that Illinois is such a great academic school and a great team,” Heuser said. “I can't go wrong, and I think it will actually be nice to be closer to home in case I need to go back for whatever reason."
Heuser visited Iowa, Illinois and Arizona, but felt the strongest bond with the Illini. The coaching staff showed great interest, keeping a strong line of communication and checking in about her tournaments.
"I bonded so well with the team and the coaches. It felt like family there and everyone was very supportive of each other,” Heuser said. “You can just tell how close they are there."
