Giuliana Olmos was planning to take a year off and play professionally once she graduated from high school.
But after the NCAA instituted a rule change that allows players to only take six months off without penalty, Olmos changed her mind.
The problem was colleges had stopped pursuing Olmos for their 2011 class.
But a whirlwind six-week recruiting process came to a happy conclusion for Olmos last week when the Fremont, Calif., native committed to play for the University of Southern California.
"I was really lucky that they still had spots open," Olmos said. "A lot of colleges already have their spots lined up before the signing period, so I was a little bit nervous."
Olmos says she chose USC over Texas, North Carolina and the University of California, Berkeley.
"I didn't want to go far away, but far enough from home where I don't have to go back and forth every day," she said. "At USC, I still can fly home in like an hour if I ever wanted to. That was really important to me."
