Taylor Goetz wasn’t even going to play the USTA Winter National Championships this year. The blue chip sophomore from Greenlawn, New York had just returned from competing in an event in Qatar, and wanted to spend time with her family during the holiday.

Goetz was a bit travel weary and didn’t think she would have enough time to train before she would have to head to Florida.
“But for some reason I just really wanted to play it,” Goetz said. “I woke up one morning and felt like I should give it a shot. I really didn’t care how well I was going to do.”
It proved to be a smart decision.
The No. 22-seeded Goetz won the first USTA ball of her career by capturing the Girls 16s singles title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 13 Pearlie Zhang of Plainsboro, New Jersey in cold and windy conditions on the clay courts of the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
