Knowing how college coaches recruit and what they are looking for can make the process less intimidating for prospects.
Our “Recruiting Insider” series features coaches from across the nation sharing how they got started in the profession and their methods of scouting and communicating with potential recruits.
Today, we hear from Lawrence Technological University men’s and women’s coach Griffin Mertz:
How did you get into coaching?
I was a player myself at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. I loved the dynamic of college tennis and how it made such an individual sport into something team-based. I always saw my coach as a great leader and role model, and the more time I spent with the team and around the coaching staff, the more I realized this was a career path I wanted to pursue. Although college athletics is not always the easiest to jump directly into, I was lucky enough to accept the assistant coaches position at Lawrence Technological University a semester after graduating. I was able to move up the ladder to interim head coach and now head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams here at Lawrence Tech.
