With her parents both former Division I college players and Billie Jean King as a mentor, it's no surprise that blue chip Susanna Maltby gravitated to tennis. Throughout her junior career, Maltby listened and learned from her extended tennis family, using that input as she searched for the right school. Her first choice was the University of North Carolina, and the 17-year-old from Glen Ellyn, Illinois committed to the Tar Heels this spring.

"It's great that it worked out, because I know it doesn't always," said Maltby, a rising senior at Glenbard West High School. "Obviously, the tennis is amazing, but the academics at the school were very appealing to me, so it was definitely my No. 1. Getting to go there is super exciting."
Maltby knew that as a perennial national title contender North Carolina is the first choice of many recruits, so she kept her options open and focused on posting results that would warrant an offer from the Tar Heels.
"I took three officials and a few unofficials as well," said Maltby, who also considered several Big Ten schools, including Northwestern, where her aunt Diane Donnelly Stone won the NCAA women's doubles title in 1987. "North Carolina's a tough place off of how good they are, so I knew it was going to take a little bit longer and I would have to prove that I have the potential to go there."
