2006 Top Mid-Major Women's Classes

When sports fans look at college athletics, they often limit their vision to the seventy or so schools in the so-called "major" conferences that play for national championships in football.

In college tennis, there are almost 2,500 tennis programs nationwide, and the quality of tennis play is excellent at many of those schools.

Just take a look at the 2006 NCAA Division I Championships. Twenty-eight women's teams and twenty-six men's teams in the tournament were "mid-major" programs from outside the seven tennis power conferences. Six of those mid-major teams were seeds. Heck, Pepperdine went so far as to win the men's championship as a mid-major.

And we have not even scratched the surface of Division II, Division III, NAIA, NJCAA, and CCC tennis - organizations that crown twelve teams as champions each and every year.
