Emma Navarro saw no reason to wait.
Although she could have prolonged her college selection process for a few more years, the rising sophomore blue chip knew Duke was the school she wanted to attend.
Navarro verbally committed to play for the Blue Devils last month.
“I visited the campus a few months ago and it was super, super nice. And I met the coach (Jamie Ashworth) and he watched some of my matches and I really liked him,” Navarro said. “We watched the girls play a match and that was super exciting and I just knew that is where I wanted to go.”
Navarro doesn't plan to alter her tournament schedule much. The Charleston, S.C., resident wants to continue playing national events, ITFs and some professional tournaments.
She is playing in the USTA Girls 18 National Clay Court Championships this week in Memphis, Tenn., and will play in the Girls 16s at national hardcourts next month in San Diego.
“I feel like at the clays I can play against really good competition and get my level to the level they are playing in the 18s. I think that is where I need to be playing,” Navarro said. “For the hardcourts, I want to play in the 16s and try to get a wild card into the U.S. Open if I can win that.”
