College tennis is now in full swing, with last month’s achievements including three coveted ITA Indoor Titles for teams from North Carolina and Georgia. Former collegiate stars also distinguished themselves in February, and juniors made their presence felt with ITF Junior and Pro Circuit titles.
Olga Danilovic
The 17-year-old from Serbia went 3-0 in Fed Cup singles play last month in the Group 1 Europe/Africa Promotional Playoff. Although Serbia fell to Latvia 2-1 in the final stage, the left-hander earned the best win of her career, beating WTA No. 15 Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-4 in a live rubber. Danilovic, a three-time junior slam doubles champion, is currently ranked just outside the WTA Top 300.
Marta Kostyuk
After being named an ace in January for her performance at the Australian Open, the 15-year-old Ukrainian earned another round of applause in February for her title at the $60,000 ITF Women’s Pro Circuit event in Burnie Australia. Unseeded, Kostyuk twice came from a set down to advance to the final, where she posted a routine 6-4, 6-3 victory over top seed Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. With that title, Kostyuk, who partnered with Danilovic for last fall’s U.S. Open girls doubles championship, has moved into the WTA’s Top 200 for the first time.
Iga Swiatek
After a seven-month injury hiatus, the 16-year-old from Poland returned to claim a title in her first tournament back, taking the $15,000 ITF Women’s Pro Circuit event in Egypt. Swiatek defeated the No. 2 seed in the opening round, one of her three three-set victories during the week. In the final, she defeated unseeded Britt Geukens of Belgium 6-3, 6-1 for the fourth ITF Pro Circuit title of her career. Swiatek led her country to the Junior Fed Cup title back in 2016, just prior to her first pro title.
