Coaching Roundtable
Assistant Coaches Bring Great Value to College Programs
Share:

They establish strong relationships with incoming recruits. They are always ready to get on the court and help players work on their games. They are always available to talk with players about their problems.

They make grocery store runs between matches, and find a way to get rackets strung at odd hours.

Assistant coaches are vital components of college programs across the nation. The value they bring to teams can’t be overestimated.

What do they enjoy about their job and why do they stay? We asked a few longstanding assistant coaches in this month’s Coaching Roundtable.

Aleke Tsoubanos, Vanderbilt women

“I had such an enriching and memorable experience as a student-athlete at Vanderbilt that I could see myself getting into collegiate coaching even before I graduated. The team can tell you I tend be a little (wink) competitive so I enjoy that aspect of college tennis greatly. It’s also incredibly rewarding to watch your players grow and develop in the time they are with you, both on the court and as people. I love that in tennis we can get out on the court and play the sport we coach every day, that’s probably the most enjoyable part of being a college tennis coach, even if it makes the team laugh!

“I played for Coach (Geoff) MacDonald so I think being an alumna is pretty advantageous and adds value to the team. I know the school so well and that makes it an easy place to recruit to, which is a big part of what I do for our program. We haven’t had a director of operations until this season so I’ve spent a lot of time trying to make team travel and logistics as seamless as possible to help keep stress down and let the team focus on competing.”
