Driving by Northwestern now just feels different for Max Bengtsson. The blue chip senior from nearby Glencoe, Illinois has done it many times over the years, but the sight elicits stronger emotions.

He can see his future coming into greater focus. He feels a buzz of excitement, knowing he’s a year away from opening the next chapter of his life.
Bengtsson will be signing with Northwestern this month, with the signing period having opened this week.
"I remember coming out of my visit there with a distinct feeling that felt a little bit more special than anywhere else,” Bengtsson said. “I know for some kids it’s completely a turn off if a college is close to home, or others really want to be close to home. For me, it didn’t really matter. I just wanted to find a school that had everything I was looking for.”
A strong student with a 5.05 weighted GPA and 1490 SAT score, Bengtsson wanted to find a college with a great combination of strong academics and tennis.
He considered many Ivy League schools, but Northwestern’s facilities, engineering program and Big Ten Conference affiliation impressed him the most.
To get an idea of what it’s like to play at Northwestern, Bengtsson spoke with Natan Spear, a sophomore on the team.
"I have been playing with him for a while and he was really able to talk to me early on about the school,” Bengtsson said. “He would tell me all about his experience and had good insight on everything."
