Clayton Upsets Embree to Take 18s Clay Title
by Julie Wrege, 25 July 2007
Memphis, Tennessee - and the Racquet Club of Memphis - have long been home to the USTA Girls' 18 National Clay Courts championships. Last week's tournament was another success. Chair umpires - and ballkids on the featured courts - made for a great environment. And there were some great upsets as well.

The tournament started out as expected, with the top eight seeds all progressing through the draw to to the round of 32. But when the weather heated up to the mid-90s, so did #17 seed
Courtney Clayton (Plantation, FL). She surprised second-seeded
Claire Bartlett (Chattanooga, TN) 6-3, 6-3.
And Clayton kept rolling. After a three-set victory over ninth-seeded Stacey Lee (Old Westbury, NY) in the round of 16, she trounced #5 seed Alison Riske (McMurray, PA) in the quarterfinals.
