Getting Started
Choosing a College Recruiting Service

When I look around the Internet, I quickly find a lot of different recruiting services. Which ones should I consider using?

I get asked this question a lot. Parents and players are wondering which types of placement help is best, which ones are going to get them a scholarship, etc.

College Search = Job Search

My opinion has always been that the college recruiting process is like a job search. Yes, I happen to have been a college career counselor for over 12 years, but that is not why I say it. Most parents can relate to the job search process, and so they are in good position to help their children with that approach.

Going to an outfit that promises to place you at a good college or get you a scholarship is like going to an employment service that is only looking to get you placed so they can collect their fee. Their obligation is to the end product - not to the best interests of either client.

My approach has focused on the student-client, with appropriate and considered placement as the priority. The best fit for the individual student is what it most important. The student-athlete and his or her family must do the work. Otherwise the choice is not really theirs - it is something they've been thrust into in order to 'make the sale.'
