College Commitment Countdown: Herzberg Heads for the Bears by
Ali Jones, 1 April 2008
Five-star recruit Cassandra Herzberg and nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles have two things in common: They each have two-fisted grips on both wings. They also are not afraid to leave their comfort zones.
Herzberg, sun-spoiled Florida native, is going to
Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where temperatures hover in the 40s on a nice winter day.
Seles, who officially announced her retirement from professional tennis this year, has committed to the hit series Dancing with the Stars, where she will have to choreograph moves that display grace and balance on the dance floor, rather than on a tennis court.
Herzberg fell in love with Brown during an official visit, and she's willing to sacrifice the beach and sun while in college.
"She was a perfect fit for Brown," said Bears Coach Paul Wardlaw. "[She has] an engaging personality, good sense of humor, [is] an active and inquisitive learner who has a good feel for where she's going and what she wants out of her college experience."
He sees Herzberg thriving in a competitive college atmosphere, and he likes what she brings to the team.
Her inner fire complemented with powerful groundstrokes has taken Herzberg to number 43 in her class and 6 in her home state of Florida.
