Getting To Know Defending MSHSL Champ Wyatt McCoy
by Lisa Mushett, 21 May 2008
Special from the USTA/Northern Section

Wyatt McCoy of Shoreview, Minn., became the first eighth grader in history to win the AA singles title at the Minnesota State High School Tournament in 2007 and is currently ranked #2 in USTA Northern Boys 18s, even though he is not celebrating his 16th birthday until August.

The wunderkind is also making a name for himself on the national and international level as he is ranked #41 nationally in Boys 16s and has advanced to the round of 16 at many National tournaments including the Copper Bowl and USTA Winter Open this year. He also played his first ITF international tournament this March, where he advanced to the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles.

Even with all this individual success, McCoy keeps it all in perspective and knows what is important to him. He admits that winning the USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championship in 2004 was just as big a deal, if not bigger, than the state singles title he won last year. He also says that although winning his second state title would be "great," it is more important that his Mounds View High School team, currently ranked #1 in the state, reclaims the AA team championship that has eluded them the past two years.

McCoy took a few minutes to answer some of our questions before gearing up for the state tournament June 3-6 at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
