Welcome Wins for Domijan and Capra at ITF Pan-American Closed

Alex Domijan and Beatrice Capra boosted their ITF world junior rankings into the top 100 last week in Tulsa, capturing the Pan-American B1 Closed titles, but that special feeling of winning a tournament's last point was the true reward.

"I haven't won a tournament in a long time," said the 11th-seeded Domijan, who defeated No. 4 seed Ryan Lipman 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the championship match. "I've been in a couple finals - in the Futures (final in June), I was kind of unlucky because I played (NCAA champion Somdev) Devvarman - but it's good to win any tournament."

Capra, a finalist at both the International Grass Courts and the USTA 18s Clay Courts this summer, was excited and relieved to score a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over No. 1 seed Pamela Montez of Mexico in the final.

"I'm really happy I was able to close this one out," said Capra, the 10th seed. "I don't think I ever really had the confidence to actually close it out before. But throughout this tournament I felt I was playing really well, and when I was beating those girls pretty easily, it pumped me up."

Capra was referring to her early round dominance, when she lost only two games in her first three matches, two of which were played indoors at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa due to rain. Her 6-0, 6-0 shutout of No. 5 seed Monica Puig in the third round was especially impressive, as was her 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 2 seed and Clay Court champion Lauren Embree in the semifinal.
