Lawrentian Serves Up an Ace of a Summer
Lawrentian Emma Levy had an ace of a summer—the Fourth Form phenom powered to a national ranking of 32 in the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) Girls' 16 Division.
In tournament play from Virginia to California, including the USTA's National Championships, National Clay Court Championships, and Girls' 18 National Team Championships, Levy prevailed in 29 of her 36 matches.
Levy is an essential part of Lawrenceville's girls' varsity tennis squad where she competes at first singles. Last year, she helped lead the Big Red lineup to a 14-1 record, capped off by MAPL and NJISSA championship titles. Levy's stellar scholastic play landed her on the 2006 All-MAPL First Singles Team as well as on the Second Team of both the Trenton Times' All-Area and All-Prep Singles squads.
Penny Foss, coach of Lawrenceville's girls' varsity tennis squad calls Levy "inspirational."
"Watching her play makes us all want to work harder. To see her attack off-court training regimes is a testament to how hard one has to work to achieve certain goals," said Foss.
Levy's winning ways can also be found around the Harkness table. She's a Dean's List student, despite a challenging practice schedule which keeps her on the court for several hours each day.
"It is tough! I know of no other players this serious about tennis at schools like Lawrenceville. Most of the players in the top 100 are home-schooled and go to tennis academies, but a strong academic environment is very important to me," said Levy. "I owe a lot to the Lawrenceville administration and am very grateful to the very supportive and caring teachers who have gone way out of their way to spend extra time with me!"
Coach Foss is especially impressed with the way Levy and her family juggle the young scholar-athlete's commitments to both academics and athletics.
"With the recent professionalization of sports, many parents and players feel as though their child must train a certain way year round, rarely missing a tournament and often putting sports ahead of all else. Yet Emma and the Levys continue to balance her tennis in light of her experience as a student and growing individual," she commented. "Consequently, Emma has been able to do it all: she maintains an extremely high devotion to the game while also buying into the concept of a team; she balances a rigorous course load at one of the country's best prep schools while also training for tennis year-round."
"And, best of all," Foss smiled, "Emma is a really great person with a wonderful heart."
Levy said that while she enjoys her solo accomplishments on the USTA juniors circuit, being part of the Big Red squad is also important.
"I was basically born on the Lawrenceville tennis courts. When I was little, I learned to swing a racquet on these courts in the shadow of my older sister and brother. They both played tennis for Lawrenceville and I always dreamed of playing on the team as well," she explained. "I'm really lucky that my coaches—Penny Foss and Katherine Creedon—are so motivating to me and to the entire team. I think we'll have a great season this year with all of the talent and spirit on the team."
Big Red kicks off the 2007 tennis season at home against the Stuart Country Day School on September 13 at 4:00 p.m.
